The Great Loop on a Jet Ski: Can a Waverunner Really Do 5,250 Miles?

There is a rider somewhere right now with a Yamaha Waverunner, a pile of fuel cans, and a spreadsheet full of fuel stops, planning to ride the Great Loop. The route covers more than 5,000 miles around the eastern United States and part of Canada. Most people do it in a trawler, taking close to a year and carrying a bed, a kitchen, and everything else they need on board. A jet ski seems like a strange choice for the same trip. But it has been done. The fastest recorded PWC run took 22 days, 5 hours, 40 minutes. What matters for a normal rider, though, is everything between the start and finish: fuel range, locks, border crossings, weather, overnight stops, and how much wear the ski takes along the way.

What the Great Loop Is (and Who Usually Does It)

The Great Loop is a circumnavigation of the eastern U.S. and part of Canada, using mostly protected inland waterways. According to the America's Great Loop Cruisers' Association (AGLCA), the route heads up the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, through the Chesapeake, along the Hudson, through the New York canals, across the Great Lakes, down the inland rivers, and back toward the Gulf. AGLCA puts the minimum route at about 5,250 statute miles, while side trips can take the total well beyond 6,000. Those numbers are useful for planning, but the actual route and available services should be checked again before a trip.

Most Loopers are retirees traveling in trawlers around 36 feet long, often moving at about eight knots. A typical trip takes roughly a year. The usual approach is counter-clockwise, following warmer weather and taking advantage of river currents where possible. There is also a strong community around the route, with Gold Burgee awards, rendezvous events, and the familiar wave between passing Loopers.

The route also passes through some remarkable pieces of transportation history. The Erie Canal section runs through the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, which the National Park Service describes as 524 miles of canal country. The canal has been in continuous operation since 1825. Riding through it on a PWC would mean moving through a waterway that is still working, not simply preserved as a historic site.

That is where the jet ski idea starts to make sense: if the route is mostly inland water, could a PWC actually cover it?

Why Anyone Would Try It on a Jet Ski

The basic numbers explain the appeal. A trawler traveling at eight knots might cover around 60 miles in a day. A touring PWC cruising at 30 mph can cover the same distance in about two hours. That does not mean a Loop can be finished in a few weeks — rest days, weather, locks, fuel and overnight stops still take time — but the riding itself is much faster. A PWC also has an advantage in the New York canals: bridge clearance is rarely the concern it is for larger boats, many of which have to plan around clearances in the 15-to-21-foot range.

There is also a simple reason to do it on a PWC: you are actually riding. The Loop is made up of rivers, canals, bays and lakes rather than one continuous offshore passage. A jet ski is easy to maneuver through tight sections, slow-speed areas and smaller docks. You are much closer to the water and the towns along the route than you would be sitting inside a trawler.

The route has also been completed on a PWC at record speed. Guinness World Records lists the fastest PWC circumnavigation of the Great Loop at 22 days, 5 hours, 40 minutes. David Fries of the USA completed the Annapolis round trip between June 15 and July 7, 2024, with a support driver handling fuel and other logistics. That works out to roughly 230 miles a day. It is a record attempt, not a realistic touring schedule, but it does answer one important question: the route can be completed on a PWC. My honest take: a jet ski gives you some big advantages and some very obvious compromises. You get speed, maneuverability and a smaller machine that can access places larger boats cannot. You also give up the cabin, onboard bathroom, storage and fuel range that make a trawler comfortable for months on the water. A PWC Loop is not a smaller version of the traditional Loop. You have to plan the trip around what a PWC can and cannot do.

The Fuel Math, Where Plans Get Real

Fuel is where the planning gets serious. A full-size touring PWC carries roughly 18 gallons. At a relaxed touring pace, owner-reported fuel economy is around 4 to 6 miles per gallon, giving an estimated range of about 90 to 110 miles per tank. That is only a planning estimate. Your actual range will change with speed, load and water conditions, so a proper fuel test on your own machine is much more useful than relying on a generic number. At 5,250 miles, the trip could require roughly 55 to 65 fuel stops. Missing one on a remote stretch is not a minor inconvenience.

Most of the route is easier because the waterways pass through towns and marinas, where fuel is generally available to larger Loop boats. The exception that deserves serious attention is the upper Mississippi section between Alton, Illinois and Paducah, Kentucky. AGLCA's published FAQ identifies roughly 240 miles without a fuel stop. Larger boats can carry substantial reserve fuel. A PWC has much less room to work with.

For a PWC, that same gap is much harder. If your practical range is about 100 miles, a 240-mile section requires a large additional fuel reserve — roughly 15 gallons if the 100-mile figure holds. Carrying that much fuel changes how you load and tow the machine, so it needs to be planned well in advance. The record run handled the problem with a support vehicle. A solo rider would need a safe, legal and properly secured way to carry enough fuel. One long gap like this can require more preparation than hundreds of ordinary miles.

The practical approach is simple: plan around the fuel gaps first. Mark every reliable fuel stop, identify the sections where a backup plan is needed, and only then build the daily mileage around those constraints.

Locks, Big Water, and the Nights

The locks. The New York canals contain dozens of locks. The routine is straightforward: contact the lockmaster, wait for your turn, enter the chamber, secure the boat and manage the changing water level as the lock fills or drains. On a PWC, the experience is much more hands-on than it is in a trawler. You are close to concrete walls, hardware and other boats while the water is moving around you. The procedure may become familiar after a few locks, but the consequences of getting careless do not.

The big water. Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Mobile Bay are different from the protected sections. Conditions can change quickly, and a PWC has less margin for poor weather than a larger boat. These crossings need a proper marine forecast and a conservative weather window. If the conditions are not right, the schedule has to wait.

The calendar. Seasonal lock closures in the north make timing part of the route. A rider needs to account for the spring start, the canal and Great Lakes season, and the return south before winter conditions arrive. A delay of several weeks can change the entire plan, especially when the northern sections are involved.

And the nights. A PWC has no cabin, so there is no sleeping aboard. Every night needs a motel, campground or another secure place near the water. That also means thinking about where the ski will be left and how the day's gear gets from the dock to the room. It sounds like a small detail, but repeating that process for weeks can become one of the biggest logistical parts of the trip.

What 6,000 Miles Does to a Hull

There is another part of a long PWC trip that is easy to underestimate: repeated contact with docks. A traditional Looper might tie up around 150 times during a year. A PWC trip can involve more than 100 nights of pulling the ski out, securing it or leaving it alongside docks, plus all the close work inside locks. Concrete lock walls, steel seawalls and marina timbers are not particularly forgiving surfaces.

Gelcoat is durable, but repeated small impacts add up. A season of pushing against docks and lock walls can mean scuffed rub rails, chips around the chine and general hull wear. None of those contacts may seem serious on its own. After dozens or hundreds of them, the damage becomes much easier to see.

That is where an inflatable collar can be useful. Positioned around the waterline, it creates a buffer between the PWC and the dock or wall during routine contact. Salt and brackish water are another concern. A PWC running day after day in those conditions needs regular freshwater rinsing and basic corrosion care. Safety, Communications, and the Canadian Section

A trip this long needs a safety routine that does not change from one state to the next. One basic requirement is the engine cut-off switch. Since April 1, 2021, federal rules require operators of covered recreational vessels under 26 feet to use the ECOS link when the vessel is on plane or above displacement speed. The U.S. Coast Guard explains the ECOS requirements here. On a PWC, that means wearing the lanyard whenever you are underway.

The rest of the basic safety equipment still matters: a properly fitted life jacket that is worn, a sound-producing device, and visual distress signals where required. The Great Lakes and coastal sections have their own requirements, and some states restrict PWC operation to daylight hours. Those rules should be checked for each section of the route rather than treated as one nationwide checklist.

Communications deserve just as much attention. Cell coverage can be unreliable on remote river sections and parts of the Great Lakes. A handheld VHF marine radio gives you access to channel 16 and marine weather information, while a satellite messenger can cover areas outside both cell and VHF range. Before departure, leave a float plan with someone ashore and include your route, fuel stops and expected check-ins. A free Vessel Safety Check from the Coast Guard Auxiliary is also worth doing before a long trip. If you are covering thousands of miles, towing coverage can be another practical backup.

Canada adds another layer of planning. The northern route through the Trent-Severn, Rideau and Georgian Bay includes an international border crossing. Bring a passport for everyone on board, vessel registration and the required proof of competency. According to Transport Canada's operator card guidance, non-residents using their own foreign-registered craft in Canadian waters for fewer than 45 consecutive days are exempt from the Canadian operator card requirement, provided they carry proof of residency. Longer stays and Canadian-licensed or rented craft can have different requirements, and a NASBLA-approved U.S. state boater card is accepted as equivalent proof of competency. Canadian safety-equipment requirements also need to be checked before the crossing.

Verify before you launch. Regulations, lock schedules, and route services change season to season. Treat this article as a map of what to check, not the checking itself: confirm current rules with the Coast Guard, Transport Canada, and AGLCA close to your departure date.

The Gear That Survives the Loop

Packing for a PWC Loop is mostly a storage problem. You need enough equipment for a long trip without turning the ski into an unstable load. A practical core kit includes:

  • A towable gear platform. An inflatable sled can add useful carrying capacity for duffels, camping gear and, where legal and safely secured, additional fuel. Keeping the load off the PWC itself also helps preserve the available storage and balance. Weight distribution still matters, so the loaded setup should be tested before the trip.
  • An inflatable collar. As above — months of nightly dock contact, one buffer.
  • Waterproof storage. Use dry bags for clothing and electronics, a waterproof phone case, and offline maps or charts for areas where coverage may disappear.
  • Anchor kit. A small fluke anchor and about 50 feet of line can be useful for short stops and waiting out conditions. Practice anchoring before the trip rather than learning on a remote section of river.
  • Service spares. Carry spare plugs, a filter, fuses and a basic tool kit. It is also worth keeping a list of service locations along the route so a minor problem does not become a major detour.

How You'd Actually Train for It

A 5,250-mile trip is not something to test for the first time on the actual Loop. Build up the distance and the daily routine in stages:

Start with a 50-mile day and see how your body handles several hours on the water. Move to a 100-mile weekend with the gear you expect to carry. After that, try three or four consecutive days at 150-plus miles. That last step matters because a long Loop is not one big ride. It is a long series of riding days, fuel stops, loading, unloading and maintenance.

The two skills that deserve the most attention are rough-water riding and patience. Great Lakes and Gulf conditions can change quickly, so solid safety fundamentals should come before adding distance. Patience matters for a different reason: long-distance touring includes lock queues, weather delays and long no-wake sections. The machine may be capable of the mileage. The rider still has to be comfortable doing it day after day.

If the full Loop is still a someday project, the same preparation can be tested on a smaller route. Try the Triangle Loop through New York, a state coastline or a long weekend on one river. A shorter trip can reveal most of the practical issues — fuel, storage, fatigue, weather and overnight logistics — without committing to thousands of miles.
